New York City has no shortage of diets, injections and app-based programs. The difficult part is determining which option is medically appropriate, what the quoted price really includes, whether insurance covers the visit or medication, and how weight will be maintained after the initial loss.

W8MD Weight Loss, Sleep and MedSpa provides physician-supervised medical weight loss in NYC from its active Brooklyn office. The program serves patients from Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx, Long Island and nearby New Jersey and Connecticut communities.

Why medical weight loss is different from a commercial diet

Obesity and overweight can be affected by appetite biology, medications, sleep apnea, PCOS, menopause, insulin resistance, stress, food environment, emotional eating and previous cycles of weight loss and regain. Medical weight management evaluates these factors before recommending treatment.

Medical evaluation

Review BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, weight history, current medicines, contraindications, pregnancy considerations and weight-related conditions.

Personalized nutrition

Build a realistic calorie deficit with adequate protein, fiber, hydration and meal structure rather than relying on detoxes or one “fat-burning” food.

Medication selection

Compare pills, injections and newer oral therapies based on health, expected benefits, adverse effects, route, availability, coverage and total cost.

Sleep and metabolic care

Screen for sleep apnea, poor sleep, prediabetes, fatty liver, PCOS and other factors that may affect health and adherence.

Side-effect monitoring

Adjust dose and nutrition clinically; address nausea, constipation, reflux, hydration, pulse, blood pressure or other medication-specific concerns.

Weight maintenance

Plan for plateaus, coverage changes, medication duration and possible regain from the beginning—not only after reaching goal weight.

Medical weight-loss options available in NYC

Option Why it may be considered Key considerations
Phentermine Affordable oral appetite suppressant approved for short-term use. Blood pressure, pulse, insomnia, anxiety, cardiovascular history, glaucoma, thyroid disease and pregnancy require review.
Phentermine/topiramate
Qsymia or clinically selected separate generics
One of the more effective established oral strategies; may reduce appetite and cravings. Major fetal risk from topiramate, cognitive and mood effects, heart-rate and eye-related precautions. Separate generic tablets are not identical to Qsymia.
Contrave
naltrexone/bupropion
May fit selected patients with cravings or reward-driven eating. Not used with opioids; seizure risk, blood pressure and psychiatric history matter.
Orlistat
Xenical/Alli
Reduces dietary-fat absorption; a lower-dose version is available over the counter. Gastrointestinal effects, fat-soluble vitamins and drug interactions require attention.
Saxenda
liraglutide
Daily GLP-1 injection with an established chronic weight-management indication. Daily injections and gastrointestinal effects; generally lower average loss than newer weekly options.
Wegovy injection
semaglutide
Weekly GLP-1 treatment producing substantial average weight loss. Dose escalation, gastrointestinal effects, contraindications, access and insurance.
Wegovy pill
oral semaglutide
FDA-approved oral option for eligible adults who prefer a tablet. Daily empty-stomach administration and timing instructions; not interchangeable dose-for-dose with injections.
Wegovy HD
semaglutide 7.2 mg
Higher-dose weekly option approved in 2026 for selected adults who may need additional weight reduction. Not a starting dose; tolerance, escalation, availability and product-specific prescribing matter.
Zepbound
tirzepatide
Dual GIP/GLP-1 weekly injection with strong average weight-loss efficacy; also approved for moderate-to-severe OSA in eligible adults with obesity. Gastrointestinal effects, contraindications, escalation, availability, cost and coverage.
Foundayo
orforglipron
Once-daily nonpeptide oral GLP-1 medicine approved in 2026. New medication with product-specific escalation, boxed warning, adverse effects, access and insurance considerations.
Brand names are not interchangeable: Wegovy is a semaglutide weight-management brand, while Ozempic and Rybelsus primarily carry diabetes-related indications. Zepbound is the tirzepatide obesity and sleep-apnea brand, while Mounjaro is the diabetes brand. The clinician should document the exact product, indication and dose.

Affordable GLP-1 weight-loss options at W8MD NYC

Affordability should be based on the complete cost—not only an introductory weekly number. Patients should ask whether the price covers the medication, which dose it includes, how the cost changes during escalation, whether the clinical visit is billed to insurance, which pharmacy supplies the product, and whether the medication is FDA-approved or compounded.

Limited-time W8MD starting prices

Budget-conscious, physician-supervised pathways

Semaglutide-based$29.99/week+With insurance accepted for qualifying visits; self-pay from $59.99/week+.
Tirzepatide-based$45/week+With insurance accepted for qualifying visits; self-pay from $69.99/week+.
Phentermine/topiramate$59.99 biweekly+With insurance for qualifying visits; self-pay from $75 biweekly.
Prior authorizationWhen coverage existsW8MD may submit documentation when the patient meets plan criteria.

Medical evaluation required. Eligibility, dose, medication source, pharmacy, availability, visit coverage, labs, shipping and total cost vary. GLP-1 pricing may increase with dosage. Insurance acceptance for visits does not guarantee medication coverage. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved or generic equivalents of approved brands.

FDA-approved products versus compounded GLP-1 medication

Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are not FDA-approved and are not generic versions of Wegovy or Zepbound. They do not undergo FDA premarket review for safety, effectiveness or quality. FDA has warned about dosing errors, fraudulent labeling and unapproved products marketed online.

When discussing an affordable compounded pathway, ask why compounding is medically appropriate, the identity of the licensed pharmacy, the exact active ingredient and concentration, dosing units, storage, shipping and how adverse events are handled. FDA-approved products should be used when they meet the patient’s needs and are accessible.

How insurance may help

Marketplace and many other health plans include preventive obesity screening or counseling, but federal law does not guarantee that every obesity visit, program or prescription is fully covered. Benefits vary by employer, insurer, network, diagnosis, deductible, pharmacy formulary and prior-authorization rules.

  • Confirm whether W8MD is participating with the plan for the requested visit.
  • Ask whether the pharmacy benefit covers anti-obesity medication.
  • Check BMI, comorbidity, previous-treatment and step-therapy requirements.
  • Ask about copay, deductible and coinsurance.
  • Determine whether laboratory tests, sleep testing or supplies are separate.

W8MD accepts many insurance plans for qualifying visits and can assist with prior authorization when a medication benefit exists and clinical criteria are met. Approval is determined by the plan and cannot be guaranteed. See current federal information about preventive services for adults.

Sleep medicine can be part of weight management

Snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, morning headaches, unrefreshing sleep and daytime sleepiness may indicate obstructive sleep apnea. Poor sleep can worsen fatigue, appetite control and cardiometabolic risk, while obesity can worsen airway obstruction.

W8MD’s integrated model can include sleep consultation, a home sleep study in NYC when appropriate, PAP-related care and weight management. Zepbound is FDA-approved for moderate-to-severe OSA in selected adults with obesity, but it does not replace diagnostic testing or PAP when PAP is indicated.

What to expect from the W8MD program

  1. Initial assessment: weight history, medical conditions, medicines, blood pressure, appetite, nutrition, sleep and previous treatment.
  2. Risk review: BMI, waist size, metabolic risk and contraindications; laboratory testing when clinically indicated.
  3. Treatment selection: nutrition-only care, traditional medication, GLP-1 or another option based on shared decision-making.
  4. Follow-up: response, side effects, vital signs, adherence, protein, hydration, constipation prevention and activity.
  5. Maintenance: a long-term plan for continued treatment, plateaus, insurance changes and early weight regain.

Frequently asked questions

Who may qualify for prescription weight-loss medication?

Many chronic weight-management medicines are indicated for adults with obesity or adults with overweight plus at least one weight-related condition. Each product has its own criteria, contraindications and age range. A medical evaluation is required.

Which works better: phentermine/topiramate, Wegovy or Zepbound?

Incretin medicines generally produce greater average loss than older pills, and tirzepatide produced greater loss than semaglutide injection in a head-to-head obesity trial. However, phentermine/topiramate remains an effective and often less expensive oral option. The best choice depends on safety, preference, coverage and cost—not average trial weight loss alone.

Does W8MD accept insurance?

W8MD accepts many insurance plans for qualifying visits. Network participation, benefits, deductibles and copays must be confirmed. Visit coverage does not mean a weight-loss medicine is covered.

Can W8MD obtain prior authorization?

When a plan covers anti-obesity medication and the patient meets its criteria, W8MD can submit documentation such as BMI, weight-related conditions, treatment history and clinical notes. The insurer makes the final decision.

How much do W8MD GLP-1 injections cost?

Starting-price pathways may begin at $29.99 per week and up for semaglutide and $45 per week and up for tirzepatide when insurance is accepted for qualifying visits. Self-pay starts at $59.99 and $69.99 per week and up, respectively. Dose, medication source, labs, shipping and other program needs can change the total.

Are compounded GLP-1 injections FDA-approved?

No. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and are not generic equivalents of Wegovy or Zepbound. Ask for complete information about the product and pharmacy.

Does W8MD offer non-GLP-1 options?

Yes. Eligible patients may discuss phentermine, phentermine/topiramate, Contrave, orlistat, nutrition-only treatment, meal replacements or another medically appropriate approach.

Will I regain weight after stopping medication?

Regain is common after effective treatment stops because obesity is chronic. Duration, affordability, nutrition, activity, sleep and a maintenance strategy should be discussed before treatment begins.
